How to gain fuel mileage

  • Check your tire pressure – run them at a slightly higher pressure.
Tip: Just because a tire looks normal doesn’t mean it’s properly inflated. Get a good tire gauge and learn to use it or visit your local Napa Autocare Center.
  • Have the wheel alignment inspected – proper wheel alignment will lower the rolling force of the vehicle.
  • Have the brake system inspected – brakes that are dragging or that are metal to metal will cause more friction and lower mileage.
  • Filters – air, fuel and oil – make sure they are all clean, a dirty filter will rob mileage.
  • Clean oil means less friction, a clean fuel filter means better fuel flow and performance.
  • Tip: According to government statistics, a clogged air filter can cause up to a 10% increase in fuel consumption
  • Poor engine performance and check engine lights – have Jay touch on this one.
  • Motor Vac – having your engine de-carboned will increase fuel economy.
  • Check your clutch and transmission – any slippage in the driveline can cause poor mileage.
  • Vibrations – out of balance tires, worn u-joints, bad shocks or suspension can rob performance and mileage.
  • Accelerate and brake smoothly.  If you smooth out your driving, you will lower your vehicle's demands for fuel.
  • Pack light!  Extra weight kills your fuel efficiency.  In fact, every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight shaves one mile per gallon off your fuel mileage.
